Day Itinerary: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Your journey begins early in the morning with a private transfer from Kigali to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The scenic drive, taking approximately 2.5 hours, passes through Rwanda’s rolling hills and lush countryside. Guests travel in a luxury 4×4 vehicle, with an experienced chauffeur-guide offering commentary on the local culture and landscape.
Upon arrival at Volcanoes National Park Headquarters in Kinigi, you’ll be welcomed with a traditional Rwandan dance and a warm cup of local coffee or tea as you register for the gorilla trek. After a short briefing by the park authorities, you’ll be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level and preference for trekking difficulty. Accompanied by experienced trackers and armed rangers, you’ll begin your once-in-a-lifetime journey into the forest.
The trek can last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours each way depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once you encounter them, you will spend a full hour observing the gorillas in their natural habitat, watching them feed, play and interact.
