Akagera National Park is a great ecosystem it boasts a Biodiverse environment unique to the protected national conservation areas of Rwanda. It is the country’s only savannah national park and also stands as the country’s largest protected wetland area established in 1934 and is home to several wildlife species. In the past years the park used to larger than it is in the present day. The effects of the war during the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda greatly affected it as many people encroached on the land as a hiding spot. Wildlife Game Drives in Akagera National Park give you a chance to see the so-called big five of the wilderness (lions, leopards, African elephants, buffaloes).

The park is comprised of a vast savannah grassy land dotted with small bushes, shrubs, thorns, woodlands, lakes and rivers, it is underlined by the river Kagera after which it was named, these are habitats to many animals example species include Zebras, warthogs, impalas, Kobs, waterbucks, hartebeests, lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles , hippos, giraffes to mention a few and over 250 bird species. Wildlife Game Drives in Akagera National Park is the major thing to do while in here, these are conducted in sessions in the morning, afternoon, evening,  the morning time is one of the best to wildlife in the park more so the early morning risers it is a busy time of the wilderness as most of the species are out to graze or hunt,  it takes 2-3 hours doing the activity through the well distributed game tracks, Akagera is one of the few places where doing night game drives is allowed in search of nocturnal species of the park, gave drives are done in 4×4 wheel car drives with open roof tops to enhance views of wildlife.

Other park Activities to do include guided Nature walks through the park with the guidance of a knowledgeable guide, he will take you closer to flora and fauna while explaining the vast various beautiful park composition, walking near the fence, along which you will be in a position to spot animals like zebras, Antelopes,  boat cruise along the Lake Ihema the scenic cruise takes 2-3 hours while enjoying the view, the park is an important birding area expect to encounter many bird species in the conservation area. Akagera National Park can be visited anytime of year but is best during the dry season between June – September and December – January. It is important to carry long-sleeved shirts and trousers, hand gloves, huts, waterproof covers for phones and cameras, rain gear, and any other items of personal nature.

Akagera National Park is one of the closest ecosystems to Kigali city, it takes approximately 2 hours drive to reach the destination, helicopter tours can be arranged to the park from the Kigali International Airport, there is available accommodation in the park and around it example facilities include the Akagera Game Lodge, Rusizi Tented Camp to mention a few.
